idiot "what should I get" thread of the day

I already have a couple sidearms and a Rem700 riot boomstick. I am looking to get the other necessary items. We are a family of two and both plan to be armed.

I am looking to get the following and wonder if this makes sense for a protection plan. I want to have an short range tactical possum rifle, a long range deer hunting rifle and a varmint shooter. I might want a couple of the tactical ones, since the possum will be plenty, and they may be hungrier than I (since I have food).

I am thinking we need a combo of:

1 AR 15 (picky but good)
1 AK 47 (indestructable)
1 30-06 bolt action (Deer huntin')
1 22 cal scoped (Wabbits)

and buttloads of ammo and mags.

Please let me know what your advice would be on this, planning on buying probably this week. I live in the PRC (People's Republik of California), so I can't get anything that great. I can barely get ammo, it's like silver here.

I have some money to play with, so figure budget is not a big issue. I want the good quality at the price point - value.

Are there some other things I should be looking at/into? I don't want to get into glock arguments or AR/AK arguments, just does this look like a good mix and should I be looking at some other stuff. Is there a carbine or some other rifle that can perform as a varmint rifle as well as a good defensive weapon to take the 22 out of the mix? Is the ammo going to be a problem on the above? Any tips appreciated, I am pretty new to the rifles, other than some hunting trips when I was a kid, I have very little experience at what's good for what, what's reliable, dependable and etc.

Thanks all

FYI - My wife can outshoot me any day of the week with a handgun. So much for who wears the pants. I don't even bet her anymore. The guys at the range watch her targets and come look who's shooting, me they laugh at :)

Mouse- see my thread about the .22lr conversion kit. If you want .223 and .22lr that may be the way to go. Either way, an AR or AK would be a good choice for a tactical weapon.

The Rem700 is a bolt action rifle, no?

Don't over-do-it.....most here go crazy. Get a basic rifle and or shotgun and a simple sunb nose revolver. A few boxes...a case at the most of ammo for each. You can do the entire job for the price of 1 oz gold.

If you need more than that....you will not make it anyway....without a fortified, hardened, war bunker.....and then...a smart guy with skills is going to get you in the end.

If we played this game.....you in your fort....me wanting your stuff.....I'd win in no time....because I know where you are in your big place.....me, I'm hiding in the woods with my rifle......the first time you come out...you'd be dead......

This is not because I'm better that you......The same applies to me in reverse.

Get some basic guns and a little bit of ammo. Need to be pratical.

Good luck.

Suggestions: (no specific order)

Simple 30-30 lever action rifle.
2 in bbl 38/357 revolver.
Basic pump shotgun.

I prefer a full military battle rifle like an M1 Garand in 30.06....if I have to have to pick a rifle.

Take a look at the Saiga rifles, any caliber...if you live in California. They would be your best bet for a semi-auto defense rifle, as they have good accuracy and offer a great value for the money. I don't think you can legally own a standard AK or AR, and no mags over 10-round. An SKS might be another decent choice.

Just bought a Bushmaster AR-15 Modular Carbine.

Beautiful weapon and shoots nice and smooth. Only got it because the dealer is moving and doesn't want to move all the inventory so is having a good sale on all items.

Try your best to share calibers between your weapons as much as possible. I think you'll be happy you did.

Re: idiot "what should I get" thread of the day

Sorry, the Rem700 typo its a 870 riot gun, relatively cheapo but lot's of neat stuff you can do to it. I haven't figured out what I can or cannot get in the republik yet. Some good friends work the gun store and will help me through the process. I figure I need a battle weapon and a hunting weapon. I already share the rounds with the two 40S&W handguns, but smart as may be, that ammo is in direct competition to the police who use the same shit, so it's really hard to get that ammo right now. I think in the bad scenario you can probably "find" a lot of that ammo.

Anyway, thanks for the inputs, I realize there is practically no way out, but we have some very good neighbors, many of which are also armed and ready to cooperate. I am trying to get the best hope I can get, and this may not be tshtf but could be a much slower cooking process. I think having stuff in place now is an advantage, as you will not be able to get anything later in the slow boil scenario.

I will add the sks to my list of things. My wife looked up the AR and did some research and told me it "looked like a t***orist weapon"......haha

I was like "you want to throw chocolates at them?"

OK, well let's continue our viewing of the race to the bottom. Peace all and be kind to your loved ones and friends. Enjoy life NOW.

Instead of an AR or AK why not get 2 SKS's? (10 rd box) and stripper clips.
To go with a 30-06 bolt gun get a M1 Garand. (8 rd clips) Ca legal.
For a .22 lr, it is hard to beat the 10/22 by Ruger. Scope it and learn to shoot with it. I can pop a rabbit out at 75 yds easy with mine.

Along with your handguns and shotgun, this combo with lots of ammo would give you about all the basics you could ask for. IMO! Oh, and you might want to include a .38 snub or a 9mm, I believe the ammo might be cheaper than the .40 S&W. Just another couple options in case ammo for the .40 gets scarce. A .22 auto like the Browning Buckmark makes a very nice practice handgun, mine is very accurate.

look into a double rifle combo, a little pricey, but they make guns that shoot 22LR and a major size cal , like 8 x 57(8MM) or 30.06, or 9 x 57. that way, you take one rifle, and can use it for wabbits or deersize targets

Went shopping today. Picked up the following:

Howa hogue in a .223 with a scope 20" barrel for the wabbits
Tikka T3 .308 tactical. Need to get the scopes for this one still. Have a good connection.
AK - connection is getting one built for me, I might get two, deposit is down.

Broccoli.
